How to Choose an Insulation Company You Can Trust
Getting your cavity walls insulated is one of the smartest things you can do for your home. It keeps the heat in, brings your bills down, and makes the whole house feel more comfortable through winter.
But it only works if it is done properly. And that comes down to the company you pick.
The trouble is, the insulation industry has had its share of cowboys over the years. Poor installations, botched surveys, guarantees that turned out to be worthless. So it pays to do a bit of homework before you let anyone near your walls.
Here is what to check.
1. Look for a proper guarantee, and make sure it gets registered
Any decent cavity wall installation should come with a 25-year guarantee through CIGA, the Cavity Insulation Guarantee Agency. This is the big one.
CIGA is an independent body. If something goes wrong with the insulation down the line, the guarantee covers you even if the original installer has gone out of business. That is exactly the kind of protection you want.
Here is the catch. The guarantee only counts if the installer actually registers it with CIGA after the work is done. Ask them directly whether they will, and ask for the paperwork once the job is finished. If a company is vague about this, walk away.
2. Check their accreditations
Reputable installers do not work in the shadows. They sign up to industry schemes that hold them to a standard.
The ones worth looking for are TrustMark, which is the government-endorsed quality scheme, and membership of the National Insulation Association.
If the work is being done through a government scheme such as ECO4 or the Great British Insulation Scheme, the installer must also work to the PAS 2030 and PAS 2035 standards. Ask about this if a scheme is involved.
3. Read the reviews, and check the company itself
Take ten minutes and look them up. Trustpilot, Google reviews and Checkatrade will tell you a lot. Look past the star rating and read what people actually say, especially the more detailed reviews.
You can also check the company on Companies House to see how long they have been trading and whether the business is stable. A firm with a long track record has more reason to protect its reputation.
One review does not make or break a company. But a clear pattern, good or bad, usually tells the truth.
4. Get everything in writing
A trustworthy installer will give you a written quote, a clear contract, and details of your cancellation rights. Nothing should feel rushed.
Be wary of pressure tactics. Discounts that vanish if you do not sign today, cash-only deals, deposits demanded before you have seen anything in writing. None of that belongs in a professional job.
You should know exactly what you are paying, what work is being done, and what happens if you are not happy. If any of that is unclear, ask until it is.
5. Trust your instinct on honesty
The best sign of a company you can trust is one that is happy to tell you no.
If your walls are not suitable, a good installer will say so and explain why, rather than take your money and cause you problems later. That honesty is worth more than any sales patter.
Cavity wall insulation done right will look after your home for decades. Take your time, ask the questions, and choose a company that gives you straight answers.
