It’s important to check your property – especially after cold weather

We know that it’s probably the last thing any of us want to do, but a quick check around your home, just once a year, could save you hundreds, or even thousands of pounds.

Checking the pointing (cement between your bricks) or outside rendering – particularly after cold, icy weather is essential.

If you have small cracks in the pointing that may not even be easily visible to the naked eye rainwater will get into the cement work and, as any school boy knows, water expands when it freezes.

This means that in cold weather water could be sitting in the pointing or rendering will get bigger as it freezes – making any cracking even worse. The problem can quickly snowball (excuse the pun) and before long you may require a complete re-point or even re-render.

If your home is of cavity wall construction – usually from the 1920s to 1930s onwards – the problem of defective pointing can lead to any insulation in the cavity becoming damp which can easily track its way through the inside of the home creating damp spots, problems with condensation, cold areas, etc.

Much of this can be prevented if caught early and any cracks are simply filled with a matching cement.

Cavitech offer a re-point service – either just for patches as required or for an entire property.
